FAQs
To fully enjoy the festivities without the rush, we recommend arriving in Koh Samui by April 11 or 12. This allows time to settle in, explore the island at your leisure and prepare for the upcoming celebrations. While the official Thai New Year falls on April 13, the joyful atmosphere often begins a day or two earlier and may linger for several days afterward, particularly in more lively areas such as Chaweng.
Songkran is one of Thailand’s most anticipated celebrations, marking the start of the traditional new year. On Koh Samui, the occasion is observed with island-wide water play, live music and cultural traditions. Streets, especially around Chaweng Beach, come alive with locals and visitors alike during the water fights. Expect a festive, inclusive spirit throughout the island, whether you’re dancing in the streets or observing from a beachfront café.
Absolutely. While some areas, such as Chaweng, embrace the energetic side of Songkran with lively street parties, the island also offers plenty of quieter alternatives. Areas like Lamai, Maenam or Bophut tend to be more relaxed. At our Resort, you can enjoy a peaceful retreat, with the option to engage in cultural rituals or simply observe the festivities from a comfortable distance.
Yes, most restaurants, shops and services – particularly those catering to visitors – remain open throughout the festival; however, the island does experience increased traffic and occasional road closures, especially near popular celebration zones. We recommend making restaurant reservations and booking spa treatments and excursions in advance to ensure a smooth experience during this period.
Light, breathable clothing is ideal, as are quick-dry fabrics and footwear suitable for wet conditions. Many visitors carry waterproof pouches or dry bags to protect their phones and essentials. Participation in the water festivities is optional, but many guests find that joining in offers an authentic glimpse into Thai culture and hospitality.
